UN Women, or the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women, is a United Nations agency dedicated to promoting gender equality and women’s empowerment worldwide. The agency was created in 2010 to build on the work of several existing UN bodies that focused on women’s issues. UN Women works with governments, civil society, and other partners to advance women’s rights and achieve gender equality across a range of areas, including economic empowerment, political participation, ending violence against women, and promoting women’s leadership and decision-making. The agency also advocates for women’s rights at the global level and supports the implementation of international agreements and standards on gender equality.
