The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is a program of the United Nations that was established in 1972 to coordinate global efforts to protect the environment. The organization is headquartered in Nairobi, Kenya and has six regional offices around the world. UNEP’s mission is to provide leadership and encourage partnership in caring for the environment, by inspiring, informing, and enabling nations and peoples to improve their quality of life without compromising that of future generations. The organization works to promote sustainable development, protect the earth’s biodiversity and ecosystems, reduce pollution and environmental degradation, and address climate change. UNEP also serves as the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, provides guidance and technical support to countries, and helps to develop international environmental policies and agreements, such as the Paris Agreement on climate change.
