Org. Setting and Reporting
The position is located within the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA). The Generator Mechanic will be based in Kabul and will report directly to the Chief Electro-Mechanical in the Engineering and Facilities Maintenance Section.
Responsibilities
• Carries out installations and commissioning small and large capacity generator sets, Green Energy Solar Plant and related equipment, circuit breakers, Motorized breakers, and synchronization applying engineering standards and practices in the installation and maintenance of generators. • Investigates, troubleshoots, determines sources of problems, and carries out scheduled preventive and routine maintenance, emergency repairs, and overhaul of generators power Alternators, and solar plant including the installation of auxiliary systems, Battery Bank, Fuel tanks, transfer pumps transfer switches. • Assists with the installation, repair, adjustment, and service of electric motors, pumps, switchgear, and electric control devices related to Generators. • Performs routine maintenance of all types of electrical service devices, programmable logic controllers, and digital solid-state control devices installed in the generators. • Makes electrical wiring, and controller installation/ modifications including installation of Generator controller, pre-heaters; battery chargers; fuel systems and other related to diesel control circuits and electrical apparatus specific to the diesel generator system. • Performs preventive maintenance including checking for fuel/lubricant leaks, and worn parts, orders and installs replacement parts; adjusts, calibrates, and inspects the operation of the main electrical distribution system, and auto transfer switch equipment. • Prepare generator and solar plant inventory spare part list, maintain stock level, and initiate Write-off disposal of past life equipment. • Prepare Generator & solar Power plant operational & repair maintenance records, analyze efficiency, and maintain logbook including parts ordered and parts used. • Transports equipment, spare parts, lubricants, and tools to and from work sites and field offices; operates and maintains equipment, tools, and safety devices that are designed to lift, move, transport, repair, inspect, measure, or protect. • Responsible for the safe and efficient use of tools and specialized equipment. • Performs other duties as assigned.

Education
A high school diploma or equivalent is required.
Job – Specific Qualification
A certificate in mechanical or electrical engineering or equivalent is desirable.
Work Experience
As per the approved special measure for UNAMA, a minimum of four (4) years of progressively responsible relevant experience in generator mechanics or electrical engineering is required. The minimum years of relevant experience is reduced to three (3) for candidates with a first-level university degree or higher. Experience working in the installation, repair, and servicing of generators is required.
Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the position(s) advertised, Fluency in written and oral English and Dari or Pashtu is required.
Assessment
Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise which may be followed by a competency-based interview.
